If you have an MM5/6 device then yes those network shutdowns will affect your device, as MM5 has hardware only capable of using 2G networks, while MM6 has hardware only capable of using 2G or 3G networks. Once those technologies are starting to be shutdown then your MM5/6 device will start seeing increased missed regular pings/signal lost notifications and eventually lost connection completely. If you own an MM5/6 device and know 2G is being shutdown in your area then we would recommend upgrading to an M7 or M9.
M7 and M9 devices have hardware capable of using both LTE Cat M1 (LTE-M) or 2G networks.
LTE-M is a type of 4G network band that uses low power, and lower data. It has better signal penetration than standard LTE, helping reach devices deep inside buildings and incorporates cell tower handovers and roaming, making it well-suited for moving objects such as vehicles or other moving assets. Most developed countries are already utilizing LTE-M technology, while if a country is less developed then they will still be using 2G. M7 and M9 devices can also utilize 2G networks in case there is no LTE-M available, and vice versa.
Keep in mind not all countries have developed LTE-M infrastructure yet, while at the same time 2G networks remain in usage in many countries around the world, and also different countries/regions/cities shutdown 2G networks at different rates when they are in the process of upgrading to newer cellular network infrastructure.
