*Canadian and Turkish laws do not allow permanent roaming, so Monimoto SIM cards stop working after a few months. This is why we do not ship to Canada or Turkey.

    New Zealand

Unfortunately, Monimoto does not currently work in French overseas departments and territories.

*Canadian laws do not allow permanent roaming, so Monimoto SIM cards stop working after a few months. This is why we do not ship to Canada.

If you are heading to a foreign country which is not listed in this table - make sure you use a local SIM card of that country.

However, the use of your own SIM card is considered to be the sole responsibility of the user and Monimoto cannot guarantee the SIM card will work, even if in our experience most SIM cards work properly.

Local SIM cards need to be either 2G/3G sim card with data/voice/text. MM6 will not work with 4G or later local sim cards.
Correct APN settings from the Sim card carrier need to be entered in App -> Settings -> Connect -> Settings -> Change APN Settings -> Save (top-right corner)

Keep in mind each time the device is reset to default, the APN settings revert back to factory settings for the original Monimoto SIM card and will need to be changed again if using a local SIM card.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How is Monimoto different from other trackers?
    • DIY system. Almost no technical knowledge is required from you! You will not need to do any wiring, nor have any special tools. All you need to do is setup your device using the Monimoto app and attach it to your motorcycle (or any other vehicle that you wish to protect: like a car, tractor, caravan, camper, boat, etc.).
    • You do not need to change batteries every 2 weeks. Monimoto batteries last for a very long time. Depending on the type of batteries and the number of alarms you get, they should easily last around a year.
    • Monimoto also has an international SIM card inside that works in many countries.
    • Monimoto doesn't drain your motorcycle’s 12V or 6V battery. Your bike is guaranteed to start. Monimoto will never breach your bike's warranty.
    • Device calls your mobile phone in one minute to notify you of the unauthorized vehicle use.  You will be notified immediately, compared to other trackers that just send text messages or emails, which nowadays can be left ignored. A phone call is rarely left unanswered!
  • Will Monimoto sound an alarm?

Monimoto will only notify you that your motorcycle is moving by giving you a call and sending you a push notification from the app (not an SMS message!). It will not sound an alarm, block any mechanical parts of your motorcycle, or give itself away in any other way.

  • How to reset your Monimoto device to its default factory settings?

    For M9

    1. Press and hold the reset button (DO NOT RELEASE UNTIL TOLD TO DO SO) the LED will display BLINKING BLUE for 3 seconds and then turn OFF.

    2. Continue to hold button for 11 more seconds, LED will display SOLID BLUE and after 1 second SOLID RED at the same time, both RED and BLUE LED's will remain ON together.

    3. Release the button and both LED's will turn OFF for a short 2 seconds and after will be a short RED LED flash followed by 2 second BLUE LED flash. This means successful reset to default.

IMPORTANT: If you release too early you will not see step 2 or 3 behavior and instead the LED will be OFF meaning you have turned OFF the device. If that has happened, plug in USB-C charging cable to turn ON the device (should see pulsing RED LED) then unplug and try steps again from the beginning.

    For M7

    1. Ensure batteries are inserted into your Monimoto.

    2. Press and hold the little square reset button on the back of the device above the batteries for 3 Red LED Flashes.

    3. After releasing the button, the Red LED will flash quickly followed by a Green LED flash.

    4. This will reset the device to default mode.

    For MM5/MM6

    1. Ensure batteries are inserted into your Monimoto.

    2. Press and hold the little reset button next to the SIM card for at least 3 seconds.

    3. After releasing the button, the Red LED should start blinking, quickly followed by a Green LED flash after about 3 seconds.

    4. This will reset the device to default mode.

    FOR MM1/MM2

Watch this video to see how it is done:

    1. Ensure batteries are inserted into your Monimoto.

    2. Connect Monimoto to your computer or phone charger using a micro USB data cable.

    3. Wait while the red LED flashes repeatedly at least ~13 times (1 flash per sec.).

    4. Unplug the micro USB cable and you should see one long LED flash for about 5 seconds.

    5. Monimoto will restart.

    6. Parameters have been successfully reset to default.

If you are getting one continuous red LED flash, it means your Monimoto is plugged in without batteries or batteries are low. In that case please put new batteries in and try once again.

  • How to get a location of Monimoto at any given time?

It is not possible to see the location of Monimoto at any given time. Monimoto sleeps all the time and can only send locations when it is in Alarm mode.

Such functionality allows the device to work for around one year, without having to replace the batteries. We could implement the "get location" functionality, but the advantage of long battery life would be lost.

However if enabled, Monimoto can send it's location with the regular update every 24 hours. This feature reduces battery lifetime and by default is disabled.

    Additional feature 'Active Tracking':

If your device was stolen with a Key Fob, you can go to Settings and press 'Start Active Tracking'. This will unpair all Key Fobs with the next regular update and allow the device to alarm even if a Key Fob is nearby. Depending on how much time is left until your next regular update, it can take between 5 minutes and 24 hours with the default setting. For example, if your next regular update is in 10 days, the device will delete the Key Fob and enter an Alarm state then.

  • Can I use Monimoto for real time tracking?

Without your Key Fob nearby, Monimoto will enter Alarm mode. It will start sending you location notifications every 5 minutes while the vehicle is moving. If movement stops the user receives a notification movement is stopped and after approximately 30 minutes the user receives a final location of the vehicle, and the alarm is cancelled.  If at any time after the alarm was cancelled movement is detected again, the system will automatically start the alarm and the cycle will start again.

Live tracking – You can manually request a faster interval of locations during alarm mode. It will provide you with a location update every 1-2 minutes for 10 minutes in a row. After that it will go back to its regular 5 minute intervals and you can start Live Tracking again.

Live tracking can only work if there is movement and the device is able to send GPS locations.
Note: It will reduce your battery life considerably.

  • Can a Monimoto tracker be used in a car?

Yes. Monimoto can be used in a car.

Choose the car profile when pairing your device or change the profile in App-> Settings -> Connect -> Settings, don't forget to hit 'save' in the upper-right corner.

Then test an alarm to make sure the device installation location allows it to get signals and you are able to get GPS location updates. Some experimentation is necessary to find the best combination of being hidden while at the same time being able to get signals.

How does Monimoto work?

  • Monimoto 7 unboxing

  • READY mode and ALARM mode

Monimoto has two main modes: Ready and Alarm. (You can think of this as Good and Bad)

When in Ready mode, the device is always ready to sense any kind of motion.
In the app this mode is represented with the green check mark.

    Ready mode

    de22.png

When motion is detected, Monimoto device checks if the Key Fob is nearby (max. range outdoors is 50 meters/165 feet). If the Key Fob is located, the device stays in Ready mode. If the Key Fob is not found, it enters Alarm mode.
In the app, this mode is represented with the red exclamation mark.

    Alarm mode

    mceclip0.png

Note:  When the app is connected to device via Bluetooth, the Alarm mode cannot be triggered! When testing, ALWAYS disable Bluetooth on your phone. For daily usage, it is up to you if you prefer to leave Bluetooth on or off, as the device and app do not require it.

When in the Alarm mode, GSM and GPS modules are turned on. Monimoto calls the owner within one minute, then determines its own location and sends coordinates to the owner via push notification. If the call is declined, not answered or line is busy, the device calls for the second time.

    Exiting the alarm mode

To exit the alarm mode Monimoto needs to find its Key Fob. You can also stop the alarm by putting it to sleep from 1 to 24 hours. Device will go to deep sleep for chosen amount of time and will ignore any movement. It will come back to Ready mode automatically after chosen time elapses.

You can also stop your alarm by connecting to the device from the Monimoto app Settings menu via Bluetooth.

  • How to turn ON and OFF Monimoto 9

Once your Monimoto 9 has been successfully set up it will always be ON unless you specifically switch it OFF or it runs out of batteries.

IMPORTANT: Once a device has been switched OFF, the only way to switch ON the device is by plugging in the USB-C charging cable to the charging port for at least 1 second until you see blinking RED LED , it is impossible to switch ON the device from the App or by pushing the reset button, only plugging in the charging cable can switch ON the device.

    To SWITCH OFF your device.
    1. Find the reset button.

    2. Press and Hold the Reset button for 3 seconds -> reset button LED will flash BLUE and after 3 seconds BLUE LED will go off.
    3. Release the Reset button - > Device is now turned OFF. (Important. If you do not release the button after the Blue LED goes off but still hold it pressed for 10 seconds more, you may accidentally reset the device to default).

    To SWITCH ON your device.
    1. Get a USB-C charging cable and adapter (not provided with Monimoto)

    2.  Remove rubber plug and insert USB-C charging cable into the charging port.

The device is now switched ON and should display the charging LED .

  • Tips for installing the device

Correct installation is imperative for Monimoto to work properly. The good news is that it is very easy to achieve this if you follow these rules:

    1. For MM1-MM6 the thinner end (the one that has GPS letters on it) must be pointing upwards or outwards, rather than inwards or to the ground. / For Monimoto 7 and Monimoto 9  the front of the device (where the logo is) should be facing upwards or outwards, rather than inwards or to the ground.
    2. Make sure that the Monimoto end with the GPS letters/MM logo does not touch any metal part of your bike.
    3. Never put Monimoto in an enclosed metal environment, as radio waves cannot travel through metal.
    4. Hide it properly so that thieves cannot detect it.

Tip: If you keep the vehicle near your house, within 50 meters (160 ft) - make sure that the Key Fob and the device do not keep the connection between them. If this is the case, the alarm will not start until the bike is out of the connection range. If your bike is outside and the Key Fob is inside, the connection range can vary from a few meters to 30 meters (100 ft), as the walls and other objects will impact it.

How to test if the Key Fob connects to Monimoto?

Leave the Key Fob at home where you usually keep it. Go to your bike and connect with the app from the "Settings" tab. Check if your Key Fob shows any signal. Refresh by swiping down if needed.

    -DOTwtqOkUachFxboahuRWfiWXqQLB-CKQ.png

If the connection is still present - we suggest to find a different place at home to keep your Key Fob or simply place it in a metal box and reduce the Key Fob connection range.

  • How to test the device and trigger the Alarm?

To get a good understanding of how the system works - please test it thoroughly after setup, as explained in these instructions:

    1. Make sure the Key Fob is at least 50 meters (160 feet) away form the main unit in an open area.
    2. For testing only, switch off the Bluetooth on your phone. (If you leave it ON, you can accidentally disarm the device because the mobile app tends to connect via Bluetooth.).
    3. Take your Monimoto-equipped vehicle for a test drive. Alternatively your can shake/tilt your bike or move it around.
    4. In approximately 1 minute you will receive a call from Monimoto device. Soon after the call push notification should arrive to the Monimoto app.
    5. Location ping will arrive within 5 minutes.
    6. Open the app and check whether it is showing the precise GPS or approximate GSM location.
    7. If you got the precise GPS location - Congratulations, your vehicle is now safe!
    8. In case you received an approximate location, please re-install your Monimoto in a different spot inside of your vehicle. The best satellite signal reception is achieved when the GPS antenna is pointing upwards, or to the side. Never install the Monimoto device with the GPS antenna pointing to the ground!
Additionally, make sure that the end with GPS letters is not touching any metal part of your bike.
    9. Repeat the test until you get the precise GPS location.

Watch this video showing how to perform the initial testing to ensure the device is working properly:

Note: you will not receive Push notifications while the Monimoto mobile app is kept open.

  • How to trigger the alarm? It's not starting for me.

To trigger the alarm in Monimoto, you need to make sure the following conditions are fulfilled:

    1. Bluetooth is OFF on your phone.

    2. Monimoto Key Fob is not active. This can be achieved in two ways - remove the battery form the Key Fob or make sure it is far enough from Monimoto device (at least 50 meters in open area).

    3. Depending on the sensitivity level that you have chosen in the settings, you need to move your motorcycle for several seconds for alarm to start.

If you get a call or two calls, but see no Alarm or location on the app, it could be because of the app connection over Bluetooth at the moment of Alarm.

NOTE: Any app connection over Bluetooth returns device to Ready mode. To receive push notifications, the app must be closed. Otherwise, you have to refresh home screen manually.

Now when you go to bed at night, you need to make sure you enable ‘Do not disturb’.

  • Will Monimoto work with my smartphone?

There is a known Android Bluetooth connectivity issue - Monimoto does not work with Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). This version of Android is causing connectivity issues between Monimoto and devices running this OS.  There is nothing we can do about this as many other manufacturers encounter this issue too. The only solution to this issue is to upgrade your phone to Android 6.0.1 or higher.

Android 6.0.1 has addressed Bluetooth connectivity problems and Monimoto works well with it.

Here are some of the phone models that have been tested and proved to be working with Monimoto (with Android versions other than 6.0):

    Huawei P10

Huawei P10 Lite has pairing issues due to the drop in Bluetooth connectivity

    Huawei P9 Lite

    HTC One M7

    HTC One M8

  • Can I receive notifications to multiple phones?

Yes, that is possible. You can receive push notifications (but not calls) to as many phones as you like.

All you need to do is simply login with the same account (your phone number that you used to setup Monimoto for the first time is your account ID).

    Firmware 1.1.5.0 and lower

All the auxiliary phones will have limited access to Monimoto (it's called cloud access). For example, you will not be able to configure Monimoto settings from them but you will receive push notifications to all phones in case of alarm.
Home and Events tabs will look the same.

    Device list tab

    InkedScreenshot_2020-11-25-11-43-41-805_com.monimoto.android__1__LI.jpg

  • I changed my smartphone. What do I need to do to make sure Monimoto works?

If you have your old phone with Monimoto app installed - follow these steps:

Go to device settings and choose 'Unpair.' This action will unpair the device from your old phone and reset it to default parameters (For iPhone users - additionally go to Bluetooth Settings and check if there is no paired device with a name that starts with mm.XXXXXXXXX. If there is one - unpair it.).

    MM.jpg

Now pair Monimoto with your new phone as you did when you first bought it.

If you do not have your old phone or don't have access to it and you have MM1/MM2/MM5/MM6:
    1. Install Monimoto app on your new phone.

    2. Log into the app with your phone number and all of your devices should re-appear in the Monimoto app. You will be able to get Alarms and control your Monimoto as you were used to, except that you will not be able to connect to it via Bluetooth to configure settings. This is a limited "Cloud" version.

    MM3.png

    MM4.jpg

    3. For full functionality, you will need to delete your device.

Tap on app Home screen upper left menu.

Android users have to long tap on device and delete it.

iOS users need to swipe left and delete device.

    4. Restore Default Parameters on your Monimoto with a USB cable by connecting it to a computer  or phone charger (MM1/MM2) or pressing the small button next to the SIM card (for MM5/MM6) and then pair it with your new phone as you did when you first bought it.

If you do not have your old phone and have changed your phone number:
If you have changed your phone number and have lost access to your old account, let us know and be ready to prove that the device belongs to you. We will be able to remove the device from an old account, so that you could pair it with your new account. You will have to restore the Monimoto to the default parameters, as described here and will now be able to pair it with the new account.

Troubleshooting

  • I received "Signal lost" notification

If you receive a push notification that looks like this:

    IMG_6312.jpg

This means that Monimoto periodic check did not go as expected - our server did not receive a regular update from your device. It mainly happens due to cellular connectivity issues.

    Main reasons:

    • A temporary cellular network or internet connection error;
    • At the moment of communication, Monimoto equipped vehicle was parked in the area without cellular network, e.g., underground garage;
    • Monimoto batteries are almost empty;
    • SIM card has no credit or SIM is blocked.

What you can do if this happens:

    • Check if motorcycle is where it is supposed to be.
    • Wait until next day. Usually next communication is successful. (regular ping interval must be set to 1 day in the settings section - it is a default setting).
    • Check if cellular signal is strong enough where you keep your motorcycle. It might be worth moving your vehicle or Monimoto device to a different place for a day or two and see if "status not updated" notifications still arrive.
    • Rarely, and depending on where you put the device, you might have to slightly change the device location in your bike or turn device by 90° degrees - "unblocking" cellular network waves. Remember that metal interferes with radio waves, so make sure it is not touching any of metal parts on your bike.
    • If you are using your own SIM card in Monimoto, it might be that it needs a top up. We do not deactivate our SIM cards without prior notice. Down below you can see how it looks if our SIM is deactivated.

    X1a88pbN3SZB_7Z6UqzSrDSyVMQNvKfi9A.jpg
If you see this sign, you simply need to go to Settings, tap on SIM and top up. This feature is available starting with firmware v0.10.5.61.

    mceclip1.png

Here is how the SIM looks when it has been topped up:

    mceclip2.png

Additionally, if everything is fine with the card, once you connect to your device through the app by clicking Connect, you can check the status of your battery. If battery is empty, you will see that after the connection. It can be that the batteries are too low to send the battery level notification to Cloud via cellular network.

If you always keep your bike at the same location, and only sometimes get this notification (but never more than 2 times in a row) - you should not worry since during the actual theft the device would start moving and start getting cellular signal anyway. However, if you see this notification for 3 days in a row - start looking for a reason of why that is happening.

  • I am getting alarms

    If you are getting alarms:

    1. First, check if you driving together with Key Fob in your pocket.

    2. Check if Key Fob battery is full. Simply connect to your device from Settings tab and go to Key Fobs. Try to refresh several times for it to update. You should see at least one Key Fob connected. Check if battery is OK and if connection shows any level. If you have your Key Fob in your pocket and you are sitting on your bike, the reliable connection should be more than 20%. Try to put your Key Fob in to the other pocket and make sure that there are no metal things nearby that are blocking the signal.

    Screenshot_2021-04-19-09-04-45-596_com.monimoto.android.jpg

    3. If your Key Fob does not show connection and you have a Key Fob with a white ring around it, remove the battery from the Key Fob and not push it back all the way. We have discovered that the golden pad located under the battery in the Key Fob is a bit too small. Sometimes this leads to a loss of connectivity.

Here is an example of how it should look.

  • How to send a Diagnostic file to Monimoto support team?

If you were asked you to send a Diagnostic to Developers, in order to help address an issue, follow these steps:

Open Monimoto app and connect to Monimoto device via Bluetooth. To connect, you have to be close to the device (max 5 meters).

    Screenshot_2020-12-23-11-15-07-997_com.monimoto.android.jpg

You will see expanded Settings Menu:

    MM.jpg

Tap on Send Diagnostic to Developers. Your diagnostic files will be sent to our support team!

  • The device does not go into Ready mode after Sleep and remains in Alarm

After the Sleep period is over, the device will try to update the home screen to go to Ready mode. If at that time the device faces a poor coverage of the GSM network, an error may occur and the status of the device will remain in Sleep mode.

This means that the device has returned to Ready mode, but is still displaying the previous status.
The status icon will be updated with the next alarm or periodic check.

  • Device LED is not flashing

We are referring to the LED that is located between the SIM card and the USB connector (if there is one).

To save battery life, the device LED flashes only at specific events. In READY mode after successful pairing, you can see LED blinking only when connected with app via Bluetooth. After device disconnects from the app, LED flashes twice.

In Alarm mode when alarm starts, you may see random LED flashes while device registers to GSM network or communicates with server.

How to understand by just looking at LED if device works at all and whether it is paired or not ?

    • Try to remove batteries from Monimoto, wait for at least 3 minutes and put them back in.
It is required in order to discharge the capacitors and to restart the device. Observe the LED from the moment batteries are inserted - if you see one long ~2 seconds flash followed by several (up to 10) short flashes, and later you see two short flashes every 2 seconds, that means device is registered on GSM and is trying to communicate with the server. In a minute or two, LED goes off.
It means is that the device is paired to some kind of phone and batteries have power to communicate. If you missed the LED flashes and want to see them again, remove batteries for another 3 minutes and repeat the process.
    • When you insert batteries and see only one long flash ~2seconds followed by 4 short flashes and then nothing.
It means that device is in the default mode and awaiting for pairing.

Weak continuous light can mean 2 things:
    1. Boot mode in progress

    2. Firmware was deleted and new one was not successfully uploaded.
You can find more information about LED flashes in the manual.

  • I am not getting location by SMS text message

Device is optimized to work with mobile data sending push notifications in case of alarm.

Monimoto App

  • Monimoto app explained

This is the main window where all of your Monimoto devices will be listed, if you have more than one:Screenshot_2021-03-02-16-34-30-436_com.monimoto.android.jpg

When you click on a device from this list, you are taken to the Home screen of your device. You have two sections here.

Monimoto Device section shows all the details about the device itself:

    1. Battery level

    2. Device mode

Please keep in mind that Monimoto app is not showing real time information. It shows the information of the last periodic check or last connection via Bluetooth.

Key Fobs section shows Monimoto Key Fob's id and battery level.

  • What languages are your app and notifications available in?

Currently all the push notifications and events are available in English, Russian, Italian, French, Spanish, Japanese and German. More languages will be introduced in the future.

  • My Monimoto fails to pair with the app

    Android

When you go through the setup wizard in the app - you should see "Choose Your Monimoto" tab. You should see your the serial number of your device, as shown on the label. Tap the red + sign and let the device do the rest.

    ra6XHMlHLbw_Cka9JpeFYZAHtbCCSgJY7g.png

Double check if the batteries are inserted and that the plastic pull tab is removed. If you do not see your Monimoto device on list, tap rescan. If needed, perform that several times. If you see an error message at the bottom, the first thing to do is to restart the Bluetooth on your phone (switch it off and back on), and try to pair again. Some phone models, especially the ones with 6.0.1 Android version, require multiple attempts to connect.

Additionally, if you do not see the device in the "Choose Your Monimoto" tab, try to clean cache and data:

    1. Open Settings menu in your phone.

    2. Find Monimoto App in the menu, then locate the app.

    3. Tap on Storage and clear the data.

    Screenshot_2021-02-25-16-08-16-247_com.miui.securitycenter.jpgScreenshot_2021-02-25-16-08-20-354_com.miui.securitycenter.jpg

If you are still stuck, try this sequence:

    1. Go to Monimoto app ->
    2. Home tab ->
    3. Upper left corner 'burger' menu ->
    4. Long tap (delete) your Monimoto ->
    5. (If you have MM1/MM2) Connect Monimoto with batteries installed to computer for 13 seconds ->
(If you have MM5/MM6) Push the small button next to the SIM card and hold it for 3 seconds ->
(if you have Monimoto 7) Push the small button above the batteries and hold for 3 seconds ->
(If you have Monimoto 9) Press and hold the reset button for 14 seconds, the reset button LED will start to blink BLUE ->
    6. Pair like the first time

  • Monimoto is not working. Should I delete my app and re-install it?

    No.

You should never delete you app, unless you are advised to do that by our customer support. The issue is usually fixed by doing a re-pair or turning Bluetooth on and off a couple of times. If that does not help, you can always reach out to our customer support.

If you delete and download your app again without deleting the devices in it - it will show you the cloud version (for devices with firmware version 1.1.5.0 and older).
    You will get this message:

    Screenshot_2020-12-15-10-47-46-545_com.monimoto.android__1_.jpg

The cloud version does not mean that your device will not function. You will not be able to configure Monimoto settings, but you will still receive all the push notifications.

In the end, you will have to repair your device again and that will only add more work.

  • I deleted Monimoto from the device list in the app

When you delete Monimoto from the device list in your app, it is deleted from your account and from cloud server.

    mmde1.png

Additionally, iPhone users have to check if device is in the list of paired Bluetooth devices. If it is, delete device from Bluetooth list. Go to phone's Bluetooth settings and choose 'Forget Device':

    mmde2.png

Finally, reset Monimoto by connecting it to your PC / laptop or USB charger (if you have MM1/MM2) or press the button on the Monimoto device for at least 3 seconds (if you have MM5/MM6) 7 seconds (if you have M7) 14 seconds (if you have M9)
Then pair it again with your phone as you did during the first setup.

  • Cellular and GPS location - what's the difference on the app?

Cellular location is an approximate location that you can get if the device is not able to get precise GPS coordinates. Why do you get an approximate cellular coordinate?

There can be a couple of reasons:

    • Your vehicle is in an underground parking, garage or any other enclosed space. Roofs, walls, other objects interfere with the GPS signal and the device is not able to communicate with GPS satellites, so you are receiving an approximate cellular location.
    • -The front part of your Monimoto 7 is touching a metal part of your motorcycle or facing down. If the device is not installed properly, it might not be able to receive GPS location. That is why we encourage to always make a test after it is adhered to the vehicle.
    • -The very top part of your Monimoto (MM1-MM6) is touching a metal part of your motorcycle or the end with GPS letters is not pointing up. If the device is not installed properly, it might not be able to receive GPS location. That is why we encourage to always make a test after it is adhered to the vehicle.

Cellular coordinates will look like this in your app:

    mceclip1.png

And like this in the map:

    mceclip0.png

Since it is not precise, it will show the radius around it.

GPS location will look like this in your app:

    mceclip1.png

And like this in the map:

  • Can I use my own SIM card in Monimoto device? (MM1/2/5/6 ONLY)

Yes, you can in MM1/2/5/6 devices.
Note* M7/M9 does not allow alternative SIM card usage as the eSIM in M7/M9 is soldered to the board.

The use of your own SIM card is the sole responsibility of the user.  Monimoto cannot guarantee the SIM card will work even if in our experience we know most SIM cards work properly.

Consider the advantages of the default SIM card included with Monimoto:

    • MM5 SIM card has roaming enabled by default. It will work anywhere in the European Union, plus some other European countries. MM6 also works in a number of countries outside of Europe.
    • Our SIM card works with at least two GSM operators in each country (up to six operators in some countries). This guarantees continuous GSM network coverage throughout the entire countries territory.
    • With our SIM card you will be notified before the subscription expires so you can renew it in time. We will not be able to notify you in case your data/voice/text is low with other SIM cards.
    • Our SIM card has APN settings pre-programmed, while other SIM cards will require you to enter APN details during the pairing process. You'll have to obtain APN settings from your SIM card provider.
  • I was asked to enter APN settings (MM1/2/5/6 ONLY)

If you are using an alternative local SIM card other than the one you received with your device - you will need to enter APN address settings. You should be able to get it from the GSM operator that the SIM card belongs to. However if you are trying to use a pre-paid SIM card and it is empty - you will most likely not be able to pair Monimoto with your phone until you put money into your SIM card.

If you are using the Monimoto SIM card and were asked for APN settings then:

    Enter m2m.tele2.com

    leave USER Empty

    leave PASSWORD Empty.

This APN is the default factory installed setting and looks like this:

    default_APN.jpg

After entering APN Settings, don't forget to hit 'Save' in the top-right corner, otherwise the changes will not be saved.

Note: Paired devices remember APN settings until they are unpaired or reset to default parameters.  Whenever a device is rest to default parameters, the APN returns to factory default for our Sim cards.  Keep this in mind if you are using an alternative local sim card that is not ours, you will need to re-enter the APN settings and save them after each reset to default / re-pair of your device.

  • Can I use Monimoto SIM card in my phone?

We are not sure why would you need to do that.

Monimoto SIM card is only meant to be used in the Monimoto device, therefore it will be blocked automatically once it is detected that it was put into another device. You will need to contact us if that happens so we can unblock it for you.
Please note that charges may apply for the unblocking procedure!

Batteries

  • Can I use Alkaline or Zinc batteries instead of recommended Lithium batteries?

Lithium batteries are more expensive than their Alkaline equivalents, but perform for a much longer lifespan. In comparison, Zinc batteries last ~ 20 times shorter, Alkaline ~ 8-10 times shorter.

Furthermore, Lithium Batteries hold on to their full voltage to almost the end of their charge life, while alkaline batteries decrease their voltage output throughout their performance.

Therefore, to have a device that works best and lasts a long time, we recommend that you only use Lithium batteries

  • What type of batteries do I need for Monimoto and Key Fob?

Monimoto (MM1/2/5/6) comes with two CR123A primary batteries that can be easily found in most convenience or photo equipment stores. Once the batteries have reached a critically low level the App will send you a notification saying batteries are low and need replacement.  Simply open the enclosure remove the previous batteries, insert new ones and close the enclosure.

Monimoto 7 comes with 2 Energizer Lithium AA batteries.

Monimoto 9 comes with a 900mAh rechargeable Lithium battery.  This battery is not meant to be replaced, do not attempt to disassemble M9 device and remove the battery.

    Note:
Do Not Use Alkaline AA batteries, or the battery reading level will not be accurate.

    energizer-ultimate-l91-aa-3000mah-1-5v-high-energy-5a-lithium-lifes2-button-top-batteries-bulk-17.jpg

IMPORTANT: You MUST NOT use rechargeable batteries. They have different electrical parameters and we cannot guarantee Monimoto will work properly or that the correct battery level will be displayed.

DO NOT use new and old batteries together as this will lead to the false battery level indication in the app.

DO NOT use Mitsai batteries as they are not compatible with Monimoto.

    mmt.jpg

WE ALSO DO NOT RECOMMEND USING DURACELL OR PANASONIC BATTERIES.

Although Duracell and Panasonic batteries are very good, due to certain physical and chemical characteristics of the batteries, the device is not able to notify the owner of possible low batteries in time.

Our recommended batteries are Energizer or Varta. Both brands are easy to find.

    Key Fob

There are 3 Models of Key Fob:

Round All-Black with '3 lines' logo
is powered by a 3V Lithium CR2450 battery

Rectangular All-Black with '3 lines' logo
is powered by a 3V Lithium CR2032 battery

Oval with White-ring and 'S' logo

is powered by a 3V Lithium CR2032 battery.

  • How long does it take to fully charge the Monimoto 9 battery and how often do I have to charge it?

A full charge of Monimoto battery takes about 1.5 Hours. (at room temperature), at temperatures less than +15C the charging current is limited to minimum to increase battery life expectancy - it would take up to 6 hours.

Depending on usage the Monimoto 9 battery can last up to 12 months on a single charge.

  • How to charge the Monimoto 9 battery?

Get a USB-C charging cable and adapter (not provided with Monimoto).

    1. Remove rubber plug and insert USB-C charging cable into the charging port.
    2. Wait till reset button LED displays solid RED indicating full battery.
    3. Remove USB-C cable and replace the rubber plug.

NOTE: If you lose the little rubber plug don't worry, it is not needed for your device to be waterproof and is only there for extra protection against dust/dirt/grime from regular use.  The charging port itself is waterproof without the plug.

  • What affects battery life? How can I save battery power?

    Monimoto

Alarm Mode is the main factor that drains the battery. With this in mind, you don't want to have many false alarms. Avoid moving the Monimoto when the Key Fob is away.

IMPORTANT: If you decide to enable "Show location on Regular Status Update", keep in mind this will also reduce battery life.

If in constant alarm mode and in-motion the unit will attempt to send a location every 5 minutes and this will drain the batteries in 1 week.  In 'Live tracking' mode, every 10 minutes consumes 1% of battery. Use this mode only when you want to track your device more closely.

  • How do I know if my Monimoto's batteries are empty?

You should be notified by a push notification when Monimoto battery level falls below 20%.  Do not wait until they are completely empty and replace when the first or second notification is received.

You can also check the red LED on the device. Remove batteries from the slot and wait for 2 minutes, then insert back. If it is blinking one long flash every second or does not blink at all - the battery is very low.

In general, Monimoto batteries last up to a year. If you received a lot of alarms your battery life might be 3-4 months shorter.

  • Monimoto is registered with another account

If you receive this error when trying to pair Monimoto with your phone, it means that your device has been paired with another account (another phone number).

If the old account (phone number) belongs to you

In this case, you need to login with your old account and delete the Monimoto device from the Device list (as shown in the image below). Log out of the old account and reset Monimoto to its default parameters). You will now be able to pair it with the new account.

If old account (number) belongs to someone else

If you bought the device from another person, please contact that person and ask them to go through the process described above. If you cannot contact them - let us know. You will have to prove that the device belongs to you. We will be able to remove the device from an old account, so you could pair it with your new account. You will have to restore Monimoto to the default parameters and then will be able to pair it with the new account.

If you changed your phone number and you don't have access to old account

If you changed your phone number and lost access to your old account - let us know. You will have to prove that the device belongs to you. We will be able to remove the device from an old account, so you can pair it with your new account. You will have to restore Monimoto to the default parameters and then will be able to pair it with the new account.

  • I unpaired Monimoto from my phone

    Nothing to worry about!

If you accidentally unpaired your Monimoto from your phone using App - Settings - Connect button (phone/tracker close by) - Unpair, then your device is ready to be re-paired and simply start pairing process in the app again.

Unless you are an iPhone user and have an MM1-MM4. If so, go to phone settings, go to Bluetooth, select the device mm.xxxxxxxxxx, click the (i) icon and tap forget this device. Then you can pair your Monimoto again in the app.

Bluetooth

  • I cannot connect to paired Monimoto via Bluetooth

Remember - you only need to connect via Bluetooth if you want to change settings. Device does not need a constant Bluetooth connection and once paired communicates with the Key Fob or Cloud server on a daily basis.

If you cannot connect to paired Monimoto from Settings tab, first make sure that you are connecting within a reliable Bluetooth range, f.e. 1-5 meters from the device.

Note: If you had false alarms for a prolonged amount time and received 300-500 locations in total, your batteries could be empty and that could cause the issue.

    Android

If your Monimoto has already been paired with your phone before and now you are trying to connect to it via Bluetooth, please make sure that Bluetooth is turned ON and that the Bluetooth logo is visible in the main toolbar at the top right corner.

If you see an error message at the bottom, the general rule of thumb is to restart the Bluetooth on your phone by switching it off and back on, and try to connect again. Some phones (especially the ones with 6.0.1 Android version) need multiple attempts to connect.

Another possible reason - it might be that your Monimoto has been restored to its default parameters.

If you have connected USB with batteries inside (MM1/MM2) or pushed a small button next to the SIM card (MM5/MM6), you've reset the paired device to its default parameters, so you will not be able to connect. In this case, you will need to delete your device from the device list.

Then pair as you did the first time.

After that, iPhone users need to check Bluetooth settings on the phone and see if there is a paired device. If there is, it needs to be deleted. Once you delete it, pair the device as you did the first time.

  • Do you need to keep Bluetooth turned off on your phone?

No, you do not need to have your Bluetooth turned off.

We understand that many of our users need to have it on, as they use multiple devices that connect to their phone via Bluetooth. Our app does not keep a constant connection with the device via Bluetooth and disconnects automatically, so it does not interfere with system functionality and performance.

We only ask you to turn it off during the testing of the device.

  • I get a GATT error when trying to update the firmware (MM5/MM6)
GATT error is a Bluetooth problem that, unfortunately, we have no control of.
We recommend that you begin with restarting the Bluetooth (off and on again), connect to your Monimoto in the app (app> settings> connect) and try to update the firmware again.

If this does not help, try this:
Remove one of the batteries >
    Wait 30 seconds >
Press and HOLD the button next to the SIM card (do not release it until you are notified to do so) >
    Put the battery in >
    Wait 2 seconds >
    Release the button.

The red and green lights should blink together.

Now go to the Monimoto app home screen >
'Hamburger' menu in the upper left corner >
Right upper corner 'head' menu >
    Restore firmware button >
There should be all possible Monimoto devices in DFU mode >
    Choose the device to update
  • Android 6.0 and Android 7.1.1 issues

There is a known Android Bluetooth connectivity issue - Monimoto does not work with Android 6.0 or Android 7.1.1.

It is good to know that in most cases, an update is always available.

Key Fob

  • Monimoto Key Fob

The Key Fob is a small device that comes with the Monimoto. When the Fey Fob is not present near the device, any sufficient movement or vibration activates Alarm mode in Monimoto.

You can add up to 3 Key Fobs to each Monimoto device. If you happen to have more than one Monimoto, the same Key Fob can be used with multiple devices.

Important! Monimoto Key Fob is not supposed to be used as a key chain and should be kept separate from your motorcycle keys. This way if your keys are stolen or lost, you will not need to fear your motorcycle will be stolen without any notifications. We recommend keeping the Key Fob in the pocket of your motorcycle jacket or trousers.
If you have a second generation Key Fob make sure to keep it away from water as it is not waterproof. It looks like this:

Third generation Key Fobs meets IP65 standards, meaning they are protected from dust and against low-pressure water jets, such as a faucet/short dip.  Keep in mind IP65 is NOT rated for complete submersion in water over extended periods of time.  3rd generation Key Fobs look like this:

    Tip!

If you keep your vehicle close to your house, less than 30 meters away (100 ft) - make sure the Key Fob and device do not maintain a Bluetooth connection with each other. If they do - the alarm will not start until the bike/device is taken outside of Key Fob range.

If your bike is kept outside and the Key Fob is inside, the reception zone can vary from few meters to 30 meters (100 ft), depending on walls and other objects. Only in rare occasions can the Key Fob connect to the device at more than 15 meters (50 ft) distance, as walls or windows usually limit radio signal range.

    How to test?

Leave the Fey Fob at home where you usually keep it. Go to your bike and App -> Settings -> Connect -> Key Fobs menu and check if the Key Fob shows any signal. Refresh by swiping down if needed.

If the connection is still present - we suggest finding a different place at home to keep your Key Fob or to place your Key Fob in a signal blocking pouch/metal box.

  • Two Monimoto devices - one Key Fob?

You can pair one Key Fob to as many Monimoto devices as you like. For example, you can use the same Key Fob for your car and your motorcycle, since you would not drive both vehicles simultaneously.

When pairing Monimoto with a new Key Fob that is already paired with another device - it's important to make sure you only have that one Monimoto unit within 10m range. Otherwise, the 2nd pairing might not work.

Important. You may need to connect to your Monimoto in the app via Bluetooth just before you ride your motorcycle.

  • Monimoto connects to the Key Fob from home

If you keep your vehicle near your home, within 50 meters (160 ft) - make sure the Key Fob and device do not keep a Bluetooth connection between them. If they do then the alarm will not start until the bike is out of connection range.

If your bike is outside and the Key Fob is inside, the connection range can vary from a few meters to 30 meters (100 ft) as walls and other objects can impact connectivity.

Luckily the Key Fob range can now be reduced.  This will allow you to make sure the Monimoto and Key Fob are not connected when you park your vehicle near your home or office. This works for MM5 and MM6 models from firmware version 1.1.2.0 onwards.

To reduce Key Fob signal range, park your vehicle, put your Key Fob in the place where you usually keep it.

Go to Settings -> Connect -> Key Fobs and slightly reduce the distance.

The Key Fob will restart and you will be able to see if the Key Fob still connects. If it still connects, reduce the range again until the Monimoto device is no longer linked to the Key Fob.

NoteReducing the distance increases the chances of a false alarm being triggered while driving.

How to test if Monimoto is an older model like MM1, MM2?
Leave the Key Fob at home where you usually keep it. Go to your bike and do this:

Go to Settings -> Connect -> Key Fobs and check if the Key Fob shows any signal. Refresh by swiping down if needed.

If the connection is still present - we suggest you find another place at home to keep your Key Fob or place the Key Fob in a signal blocking pouch/metal box.

Less Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Monimoto Thatcham approved?

Unfortunately no. Monimoto is not Thatcham approved.

  • Is Monimoto waterproof?

Monimoto meets IP65 standards, meaning it is protected from dust and against low-pressure water jets, such as a faucet. That should be more than enough for everyday use.

If you have a second generation Key Fob, make sure to keep it away from water, as it is not waterproof. It looks like this:

  • How long will Monimoto work in Alarm mode?

In Alarm mode the batteries are drained faster. It depends if Monimoto is continuously moving or not (batteries drain faster if it is), but you can expect around 10 days days in either case. A set of new batteries is usually enough for ~500 locations.

  • Can I lend my Monimoto-equipped vehicle to a friend?

You can do that. You have several options here:

    1. If you want to lend your vehicle and want it to remain protected, give your Monimoto-equipped motorcycle and the Monimoto Key Fob to a friend. This way the vehicle remains protected. If an alarm is activated, you will receive a call and push notifications to your phone.

    2. If you only give your Monimoto-equipped vehicle to a friend without a Key Fob - you can put Monimoto to sleep for up to 24 hours. However, this way it will not remain protected for 24 hours, as it will not register any movement. After the sleep period passes, the device will return to its Ready state.

    3. If you give your Monimoto-equipped vehicle to a friend without the Key Fob, you will constantly get location updates while the motorcycle is on the move. The battery will be consumed in about 2-14 days in this mode, depending on whether the device is moving or not.

  • What's the difference between Monimoto MM1/MM5 and MM2/MM6 versions?
MM6/MM2 differences when compared to MM5/MM1:
    - works in countries where 2G is switched off since it uses 2G + 3G signals, where as MM5/MM1 only uses 2G
    - consumes 30% more energy, so battery lifetime is 3-4 months shorter - so MM5/MM1 has longer battery life.
The reason for that are the below improvements:
    1. MM2/MM6 provides more accurate GSM approximate location, which helps a lot when GPS signal is not available (underground garages, GPS signal is jammed and so on);
    2. Better chances to get a GSM connection. MM6 covers both, 2G and 3G networks - if the 3G signal is low, it will search for 2G service provider and connect to it (and vice versa).

  • My Monimoto doesn't have a USB port. Why?

MM1, MM2 have a USB port, to be able to reset your device and update the device.

MM5, MM6 and Monimoto 7 do not have USB ports. These devices can be updated via Bluetooth.
Monimoto 9 has a USB-C port for charging the battery. And can be updated via Bluetooth.
